About five months ago chef/owner Nick Ni opened Sushi Ai in the heart of downtown St. Catharines. In an area seemingly inundated with sushi restaurants one might ask why. We set out to see if this latest chapter in the all-you-can-eat sushi book is worth a read. I am delighted to report that not only is Sushi Ai a welcome addition, it may well set the standard against which other local sushi restaurants are measured.

Here are some reasons why.

First, the restaurant is vibrant with the colours of the fresh fish Ni and his chefs prepare. Orange (salmon) and red (tuna) dominate the well lit restaurant which bears only a minor resemblance to Niagara’s Best Beer, the space’s former occupant.

Second, count on a wide variety of fresh, hand formed sushi and sashimi pieces showcasing some of the tastiest combinations available.

Nick Ni is ready to roll out his new Sushi Ai restaurant in downtown St. Catharines with a splash.

The space inside is worlds away from its previous incarnation as Niagara’s Best Beer.

The walls are glowing with the colours of neon fish. The centerpiece is a whimsical image of a carp created by Ni himself, through 50 hours of work.

This is his first business.

He couldn’t be more confident and his excitement is palpable.

“I really think I am coming in at the right time,” he said of his eatery at 75 St. Paul St., set to open this month.
